Is your TV slowing down? Speed it up in 10 minutes

Budget TVs and Android TV boxes have little memory (often 1–2 GB). Manufacturers add their own apps, ads and “recommendations” that run in the background and eat up that memory. The result: menus lag, apps take ages to start and the picture can stutter.

The steps below are safe and can be undone at any time. Start with step 1, as it makes the biggest difference.

  1. Step 1. Turn off previews and recommendations on the home screen Biggest difference

The Google TV and Android TV home screen keeps downloading and playing trailers. It is the heaviest thing running in the background.

    • Google TV

Settings → Accounts & Sign In → your account → “Apps only mode” → Turn on.

The home screen then shows only your apps, without recommended films or ads. Apps (including Kyvo TV) work as usual.

    • Android TV (older look)

Settings → Device Preferences → Home screen → turn off “Enable video previews” and “Enable audio previews”. In “Customize channels”, turn off the channels you do not use.

    • Fire TV

Settings → Preferences → Featured Content → turn off “Allow Video Autoplay” and “Allow Audio Autoplay”.

  2. Step 2. Shorten animations

Menus will feel faster right away.

    1. Settings → System (or Device Preferences) → About → click “Build” 7 times (or “Android TV OS build”). A message will tell you that you are now a developer.
    2. Go back to Settings → System → “Developer options”.
    3. Set “Window animation scale”, “Transition animation scale” and “Animator duration scale” to 0.5x.

Do not change any other options in this menu.

  3. Step 3. Remove apps you do not use

Settings → Apps → choose the app → “Uninstall”.

Every installed app can start in the background (updates, notifications). If you have not used something for months, remove it. You can always install it again.

  4. Step 4. Turn off manufacturer extras you do not need

Many TVs come with factory apps that cannot be uninstalled, but they can be disabled:

Settings → Apps → “Show system apps” → choose the app → “Force stop”, then “Disable” (if the button is available).

    Usually safe to disable:

    • apps with ads and “promotions”
    • “recommended apps”
    • the manufacturer’s message centre
    • statistics and “service improvement”
    • the manufacturer’s voice assistant (Google Assistant keeps working)
    • the manufacturer’s casting apps, if you use Chromecast

    Do not disable

    • Bluetooth (your remote depends on it)
    • Google Play services and the Play Store
    • the home screen (launcher)
    • the “TV”, “Inputs” or “Tuner” apps (they handle HDMI and the aerial)
    • system settings
    • Chromecast (Google Cast / Mediashell)
    • Google Assistant, if you use voice control

If something stops working after you disable an app, go back to that app and click “Enable”.

  5. Step 5. Clear the cache of large apps

Settings → Apps → choose the app (e.g. YouTube, Play Store) → “Clear cache”.

Do not click “Clear data”, as that signs you out and erases the app’s settings.

  6. Step 6. Restart the TV once a week

When you switch off many TVs with the remote, they only go to sleep. Restart yours once a week:

    Settings → System → “Restart”.

You can also unplug the TV for 30 seconds. This clears the memory.

  7. Step 7. Internet

    • A network cable (Ethernet) is best. On Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz network and keep the router as close as possible.
    • In Kyvo TV, Settings → Network → “Connection speed test” shows whether the problem is your internet or your list provider.

In Kyvo TV

  • If your TV is very weak, turn off “Live preview in the channel list” (Settings → Playback).
  • Hide the categories you do not watch (“Manage categories”, “Keep only…”). A smaller list means faster scrolling and less memory use.

For advanced users (computer + ADB)

Some extras have no “Disable” button. From a computer, with network debugging turned on in Developer options, you can disable them with a command and turn them back on at any time:

adb connect TV_IP_ADDRESS
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 PACKAGE.NAME

To restore (turn back on):

adb shell pm enable PACKAGE.NAME

Tested example for TCL TVs (Google TV):

  • com.tcl.bi statistics
  • com.tcl.overseasappshow app promotions
  • com.tcl.messagebox manufacturer notifications
  • com.tcl.guard “cleaner”
  • com.tcl.usercenter TCL account
  • com.google.android.tvrecommendations home screen recommendations

Do not disable these packages or anything with “bluetooth” in its name:

com.tcl.tv com.tcl.partnercustomizer tcl_system_server

Do not uninstall system apps, only disable them. Disabling can be undone.

Kyvo TV is a player and does not include any channels. This guide is about the device itself and also helps with other apps.
